A lesson for meaningful productivity: You Need to Practice Being Your Future Self

This morning’s great reading for me came from one of the authors of #HBR, TED speaker and coach Peter Bregman: „You need to practice being your future self.”

It touches the familiar story of “being busy”, which is not the same as being productive. Learning to choose between what needs to be done and what should be done, to get you going in the right direction, is not an easy task. And might leave you with a still full inbox of emails at the end of some days. Or with feedbacks provided one day later than planned to someone in your team.

But the work of strategising, building on the long term and developing things that make real sense to your professional and personal growth needs to take an important place in your daily priorities. Otherwise, your maximised and bettered future self will always remain in your New Years Resolutions list for next year.

An important topic I’ve been working on in the recent years is realising the difference between being productive and reactive. Productivity is about geting things done towards the goals or destination you have set. While reacting to everything that comes towards you to solve it, move it forward, take it one step higher, might not actually all be YOUR work to do for a productive day.

Here a useful, tremendously positive and cleverly illustrated book on this matter, that has really proven to be a compelling guide for me, is Elle Luna’s „The Crossroads of should and must – find and follow your passion”.

And coming back to Bregman’s perspective for Harvard Business Review, here’s a key take away – in order to grow in the direction you are aiming for, you need to spend time on the future even when there are more important things to do in the present and even when there is no immediately apparent return to your efforts.

In other words — and this is the hard part — if you want to be productive, you need to spend time doing things that feel ridiculously unproductive.
